Message from the President

Founded in April 2010, AALIMS reached a milestone at its third anniversary. As a sign of becoming an established organization, we have experienced our first “change of the guard.”

Founded in April 2010, AALIMS reached a milestone at its third anniversary. As a sign of becoming an established organization, we have experienced our first “change of the guard.” Two members of our founding Board of Directors, Mahmoud El-Gamal and Murat Iyigün, have stepped down. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to both. Helping to create AALIMS as a concept and an organization, they have been involved with the planning of every event thus far. Mahmoud also headed the organization of the very successful, but also classy AALIMS-Rice conference and graduate student workshop of April 2013.

The Board of Directors has three new members, all drawn from our fellows: Tahir Andrabi, Amaney Jamal, and Thomas Pepinsky. In 2013-14, Amaney will serve also as Vice-President for Programs. In this capacity she is chairing both the October 18-19, 2013 AALIMS-Princeton workshop on institutions and the April 11-12, 2014 AALIMS-Princeton annual conference and graduate student workshop.  Tahir and Tom are members of the organizing committee for the April events.

Planning for both Princeton events has started, and we already have a partial list of speakers for October: https://aalims.org/conferences/aalims-princeton-workshop-on-the-economic-and-political-institutions-of-isl . Please continue to nominate speakers, including faculty and students who have not been part of our network. Self-nominations are welcome. Just contact any member of the organizing committee, and suggest a paper. One of our goals is to give every fellow periodic opportunities to present work at AALIMS events. Another, of course, is to provide a balance, at each event, across our main disciplines and major areas of research.

There have been two additions to the AALIMS network of fellows. Adria Lawrence of Yale joins as a faculty fellow, and Jane Menon of Michigan as a student fellow. A warm welcome to both.

Two individuals merit special thanks for their contributions to logistics over the past year. Emre Doğan, a doctoral student at Rice, provided superb support to the conference in Houston. And Khubaib Siddiqui, who just returned to Pakistan with a Duke M.A. in economics, managed the AALIMS website with distinction.

A good summer to all. Looking forward to seeing many of you at the Princeton events.  Please contact Maureen Killeen (mkilleen@princeton.edu) if you plan to attend.
