INTRODUCTION TO THE ECONOMICS OF RELIGION:
A new grad student workshop – taught by leaders in the field
and held in conjunction with the meetings of the Association
for the Study of Religion, Economics, and Culture
March 17 – 19, 2016
Chapman University, Orange, CA

We’ve designed a special workshop to introduce graduate students to the economics of religion.  It will run in conjunction with next month’s ASREC conference (March 17 – 19 at Chapman University in Orange, California), and we can cover the costs of travel, food, and lodging for about 12 students.  But this is a competitive selection process, and applications are due very soon.

Motivation: Over the past five years, we’ve had great success running an annual workshop for advanced graduate students who have already completed some research in the economics of religion.  But many emphasized the difficulties getting started.  We have therefore created this new workshop for newcomers with at least one year of graduate training in economics but little or no background in the economics of religion.

Format: The workshop will combine formal instruction, conference sessions, practical advice, and social events.  The instructional lectures will summarize key models and results; the ASREC conference sessions will focus on current research; special panel sessions will provide practical advice on finding data and getting published; and meals, receptions, and other social events will help participants build relationships with other students and with established scholars.

Leaders: Faculty leaders include Larry Iannaccone, Chris Bader, and Jared Rubin (Chapman U.), Jean-Paul Carvalho and Michael McBride (UC Irvine), Eli Berman (UCSD), and other leaders in the field.
