Pakistan@100 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship

02/13/2018

Pakistan@100 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) invites graduate students in the disciplines of Economics, Political Science, International Relations, Sociology and Development Studies to apply for the Pakistan@100 Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. LUMS and the World Bank are partnering on a series of outputs and events centred around the question of Pakistan’s future, with a focus on where the country will stand at its centennial anniversary in 2047. As part of this initiative, we seek to support young scholars across disciplines who are interested in undertaking research in the country. LUMS is Pakistan’s premier research university, and Lahore has a vibrant ecosystem of research organisations (e.g. CERP, IDEAS, CDPR, IGC-Pakistan and ITU) that engage closely with the government to bring evidence to policymaking. This is a good chance for early-stage researchers to develop their research and build networks in Pakistan and South Asia.

Work Requirements Fellowship recipients are expected to spend at least 10 weeks in residence at LUMS, where they will divide their time between the policy deliverables listed below, and their own research. Applicants to the fellowship must identify a research topic or area of focus for their work that broadly falls within the initiative’s thematic areas: environmental sustainability; human development; inclusivity of growth; structural transformation; governance; regional connectivity; and increasing investment. Fellows will produce 1 policy report, 3 blog posts, and submit at least 1 op-ed to a major news outlet for publication. This output will be supervised by the Director of the Pak@100 initiative at LUMS. Fellows are also expected to spend at least half of their time in conducting research in support of their dissertation. The intent of this is to support exploratory or early-stage work. They will be expected to create a research plan and document their home university academic supervisors’ support for this plan. At the end of the fellowship, the Pak@100 Director will review the progress with the fellows’ supervisors.

Duration The fellows will be supported for a 3-month period of their choice between May 1, 2018 and August 31, 2018. At least 10 weeks of this time must be spent in Pakistan.

Compensation and Support Fellows will be awarded $10,000 for the 3-month fellowship. In addition, one round trip airfare from the airport of their choice to Lahore will be covered, and housing will be provided on the LUMS campus, free-of-cost. All other expenses are the fellows’ responsibility. While LUMS will seek to facilitate the applicants’ visa applications, visa costs and processing are ultimately the fellows’ responsibility. LUMS will provide a dedicated and full-time undergraduate research assistant to each fellow for three months. If the fellow desires, he or she can also be connected to an Urdu tutor. The Pakistan@100 Initiative Director (Ali Hasanain) and Initiative Coordinator (Kevin Shi) will serve as the main points of contact for the fellows during the course of their stay. We will try to help fellows develop connections with relevant researchers at LUMS and beyond, if desired.
