Matthew Nanes is a PhD candidate at the University of California San Diego. He studies the relationship between the design of policy-implementing institutions, and especially the police, and citizen attachment to the state. His dissertation asks how the demographic integration of rank and file police officers affects citizen attitudes and participation in anti-state violence in divided societies. He has conducted fieldwork throughout the Middle East, including Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Oman. Matthew's research is published in Comparative Political Studies. Matthew holds a B.A. in Political Science from Rice University.
