University of Oxford Seeks Research Officers for Changing Structures of Islamic Authority Project

01/14/2014

Oxford Department of International Development (ODID)
University of Oxford, Queen Elizabeth House, 3 Mansfield Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £29,541 - £36,298 p.a. (1% pay award pending)

ODID seeks two Research Officers to work on a five year ERC funded research programme “Changing Structures of Islamic Authority and Consequences for Social Change: A Transnational Review.”   Working under the supervision of project PI Dr Masooda Bano, the post-holders will be expected to play an active role in developing this interdisciplinary research project.

The successful candidates will be expected to: undertake original research, possibly involving overseas fieldwork; develop high-quality analytical papers drawing upon the data collected; present programme research findings at multiple academic platforms; develop and maintain an ongoing relationship with the Muslim institutions; understudy and help organise academic workshops and conferences. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the programme, the preference is to recruit one candidate with a strong background in social science research methods and the other from the field of Islamic Studies or any related field that requires specialist expertise in study of Islamic texts.

Requirements include: a doctorate in a relevant social science discipline or Islamic Studies (to be completed before the start date of this post); strong skills and experience in social science research methods e.g. interviews, ethnographic fieldwork or surveys, or specialist expertise in study of Islamic texts; ability to work in an interdisciplinary research group while contributing specialist knowledge in the post-holder’s area of expertise; excellent communication skills; and a willingness to undertake overseas fieldwork. Both posts are for 24 months, to start as soon as possible.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12 noon on Friday 24 January 2013 can be considered.
